A geographer at heart and in practice, it is fitting in this interview that Prof Hilary Winchester shares both her transnational and personal journeys to becoming Charles Darwin University University Secretary, and also shares with Jack the story behind her copy of Fatal Shore. Hilary and Jack discuss how education is the closest thing to a silver bullet for increasing life chances. They discuss CDU's balance of purpose-driven research with teaching and learning, dive into what Hilary would like to see changed in regional universities, and discuss why the sector can't go back. With an extensive and accomplished career to-date in the sector, Hilary also shares what it takes to be a successful leader.
