Carolyn and Judyth discuss interdisciplinarity as a strategy for social and sector growth - medical doctors who can write, economists with a sense of history, health professionals with data skills. They ponder what it takes to earn a student's commute into campus and dive into environmental science as an early, 'crazy' initiative. The two professors explore the give and take of cross-subsidisation in universities - research and teaching, international and domestic, scaled and non-scalable courses - and what it means for disruption and risk to higher education. Plus: why universities should not be shy about rallying support from outside the sector; Carolyn's advice to incoming leaders; and how policymakers can counter a 'short-termism' approach.

Prof Barney Glover AO is Vice-Chancellor and President, Western Sydney University, previously held yet another VC role at Charles Darwin University, and was recently Chair of Universities Australia - and he says there is more to be done in higher education. In this episode, Barney and Judyth talk micro-credentials, reinforcing and redefining the university, metrics for success, the relationship between higher education and industry, and how universities can stay economically relevant. Barney speaks to his own early education, early career, what's lacking in leadership development, and what needs more focus today in the sector broadly (society can’t develop without the humanities). At a university with a critical purpose in society, Barney and Judyth discuss Western’s mission to be open and uplifting to the local community.

Prof Jane den Hollander AO - former VC Deakin University - worked to transform the student and digital experiences in her time as leader. In this episode, Jane and Judyth discuss - is higher education being truly exceptional right now in its thinking? Are students getting a degree and innovating somewhere else? What's stopping students from thinking wider, higher, deeper, for success and immersion in university life? Jane reflects on privilege, history, politics, why she pivoted from research to teaching and learning, international student experience and skills, why education and a university degree are not the same, and her advice to Education MP Jason Clare.
